I started the group Responsible North Idaho Growth on January 27 and we have 3200 members between Facebook and a website.

We are focused on slowing growth and density, not stopping or no growth, like so many who oppose us are saying

Responsible Growth means: Responsible Growth is looking at each annexation, sub-division, development, or project at that point in time. Not looking at a Future Land Use Map that has no idea of what the situation will be six months, six years, or twenty years down the road. Evaluate the project at the point in time as to whether it is best for the city and the people of the city. How will it affect the traffic; the schools, public places, recreation areas. Are the roads, sewers, water, solid waste, and services and infrastructure able to handle the project at that point in time? Will the project pay for itself, or will the taxpayer end up paying for the consequences of what the project will bring?

I have attended almost every Hayden City Council meeting and Planning Commission meeting since the first of the year. I have spoken at a good majority of those meetings about growth and density and the consequences that are affecting so many aspects of our quality of life.

The recent Imagine Hayden 2040 Comprehensive Plan and Future Land Use Map are designed to facilitate a population of 36K people in the next 15-20 years. Hayden is currently approximately 16K people. The Comprehensive Plan Housing and Land Use elements must be amended to  facilitate a much lower number. The Future Land Use Map needs to be removed and replaced with the 2019 Zone Map, which was approved just two years ago, yet the current council approved the new Future Land Use Map, which has significantly more “Mixed Use”/ Purple on the Map, which is basically apartments that can have 12-15 dwelling units per acre.

I will work for the city to fund the Public Safety entities so that they can keep up and meet their service standards.
Many have heard the term “Tax Shift.” I will encourage the city and Chamber of Commerce to recruit more business so that we can hopefully have a more balanced tax liability between business and homeowners. The county, who collects and distributes taxes, sent me Hayden figures for 2020. In 2020, Hayden businesses had total tax valuations of 20.66% of the total valuations. That puts an ever increasing burden on the homeowners. As more residential is developed, the balance will continue to shift to the homeowners.
